Alcoa Inc and the National Renewable Energy Lab testing new solar technology.

Alcoa Inc
(NYSE:AA) is set to link up with the National Renewable Energy Lab in Colorado and begin testing a technology that uses mirrors made of aluminum instead of glass to generate solar power.

Alcoa Inc - an aluminum manufacturing giant - and NREL said Thursday the companies are measuring the aluminum mirrors' ability to collect energy efficiently outdoors and expect results in the second quarter.

Typically, commercial solar systems use glass mirrors to reflect sunlight onto receivers where it can be converted to thermal energy for use in producing electricity.

Alcoa believes aluminum will be more durable and cost-effective.

The system was tested at Alcoa's Pittsburgh plant before being installed in a 20-by-46-foot trough at the Energy Department's lab in Golden, Colo.

Alcoa said it received a $2.1 million federal grant to help finance the testing.

Shares of Alcoa rose 27 cents to $14.73 in morning trading.
